The global community has pledged not to exceed a warming of the earth's atmosphere of 1.5 degrees by 2100.

To achieve this, CO2 emissions must be reduced and compensated for.

The best way to do that at present is CO2 removal measures in the context of forestry, as shown, for example, in a study by the ETH Zurich.

We offset CO2 produced in our own production of PCB-POOL® printed circuit boards on a large scale by planting new trees.

Planting trees in the PCB-POOL® forest

Through our partner Treedom, we support the planting of new trees. This finances and supports smallholders: for the care of the trees in their first years of life, when they do not yet bear fruit. Once planted, these trees are photographed, geolocated and regularly monitored by Treedom.

How much CO2 does your PCB produce?

Determining the COconsumption of a printed circuit board is no easy task! After intensive research, we can now rely on a meaningful study to determine this consumption.

The consumption for your PCB is approx. 288 kg CO2 per m2. This value serves as a reference point for us to calculate the  CO2 emissions of our production.

How do we lay the foundation for a sustainable product during prototype development?

We balance with the help of our partner Treedom and our own projects. Our long-term plan is not only to offset the prototypes but the entire production.

How sustainably do we produce?

We not only offset CO2 but also try to produce more and more sustainably.
  • Our water is purified in a water treatment plant after consumption.
  • Fine dusts are filtered out by our filter systems.
  • All paper, cardboard and plastic packaging is recycled by our waste management service providers.
  • An ever-increasing proportion of our vehicle fleet consists of electric vehicles.
  • We are reducing paper consumption on our way to a paperless office.
  • We are switching to packaging made of 100% recycled paper and removing unnecessary plastic.

Recycling of printed circuit boards - the current status

The recycling of printed circuit boards mainly produces metals and precious metals. Unfortunately, there is currently no really functioning recycling process for the base material FR4.

However, at Beta LAYOUT we recover metals from our baths and recycle all the material that is produced during the production of the PCBs, where possible. The scrap PCBs that are produced go to a service provider that specialises in recycling industrial waste.
